Moxibustion for Breech Babies: A Natural Approach to Encouraging Your Baby to Turn

Finding out that your baby is breech in late pregnancy can be a bit of a curve ball, and brings up a mixed emotions - often disappointment that your birth plan seems to be instantly slipping away from you. You will likely be feeling some anxiety, and pressure around what happens next. If your baby remains breech after around 33–34 weeks, you may be told that your options are limited.

The reassuring news is that you have options! There are gentle, natural ways to encourage a breech baby to turn - and moxibustion is one option that has been used for centuries and is supported by modern research.

At Balancing Birth, I support pregnant women in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire & North London with holistic breech baby support, through an effective combination of Moxibustion, Body balancing, and Hypnotherapy to help optimise the environment for baby to turn.

What Does It Mean If Your Baby Is Breech?

A baby is described as being breech when they are positioned bottom, legs, or feet down in the uterus rather than head down.

Earlier in pregnancy this is very common - around 25% of babies are breech at 28 weeks. By the end of pregnancy, however, only around 3–4% of babies remain breech.

Breech presentation is a variation of normal, but it can affect your birth options, particularly in maternity settings where vaginal breech birth is not routinely supported. Because of this, many women are offered interventions such as external cephalic version (ECV ) or planned caesarean section.

Before taking that step, many parents choose to explore natural approaches that may help their baby turn spontaneously.

Why Some Babies Stay Breech

The exact reason isn’t fully understood, but possible factors include:

  • Variations in uterine or pelvic shape

  • Multiple pregnancies

  • Placenta location

  • Short umbilical cord

Breech presentation may be discovered during a routine scan, or a midwife/doctor may suspect it when feeling your abdomen, confirmed by an ultrasound.

Why Baby’s Position Matters

If your baby is still breech after 36 weeks, it can affect your birth choices. Usually, the next steps include discussing a plan of care with your obstetrician, which may involve:

  • External Cephalic Version (ECV):

    • Doctor gives medication to relax your uterus

    • Attempts to gently turn the baby by firm rotational massage of your abdomen

    • About 50% effective

    • Small risks: pain, bleeding, waters breaking, or placental issues

If the baby cannot be turned, you will be offered either a vaginal breech birth or a Caesarean. Vaginal breech birth is possible but depends on having skilled attendants and whether your hospital offers it. Caesarean birth is more commonly suggested.

💡 Remember: Even when advice is given, the choice is always yours. You can accept the recommendation or explore alternative options that feel right for you.

What Is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that has been used for over 1,300 years.

It involves burning a herb called Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) in the form of a moxa stick to apply gentle heat near a specific acupressure point known as Bladder 67 (BL67). This point is located on the outer edge of the little toe.

The warmth and stimulation of this point is thought to:

  • Increase uterine activity

  • Encourage fetal movement

  • Optimise hormone release

  • Improve circulation to the uterus

Together, these responses can help create the conditions that allow a breech baby to turn head-down.

Does Moxibustion Work for Breech Babies?

Several research studies have explored the use of moxibustion for breech presentation.

Studies have shown:

  • success rates of between 60-92% (Cardini & Huang 1998, Kanakura et al 2001)

  • Increased spontaneous turning when used between 33–35 weeks

  • Improved success rates of ECV when moxibustion is used prior to the procedure (Manyande and Grabowska, 2009)

While no technique can guarantee that a baby will turn - because there can be various factors leading to a baby being breech - babies ultimately choose their own position. Moxibustion is considered a low-risk, non-invasive option that many women feel is worth trying.

When Is the Best Time to Use Moxibustion?

Moxibustion is most effective when started between 33 and 35 weeks of pregnancy, though it can still be attempted up to 38 weeks or beyond, but as baby gets bigger and space is reduced, chances of baby successfully turning reduces.

This optimal window allows enough time for:

  • Repeated stimulation

  • Increased fetal movement

  • Baby to turn naturally and remain head-down

What Happens During a Moxibustion Session?

During a breech baby support session at Balancing Birth, I will:

  • Carry out your first moxibustion treatment with you

  • Demonstrate the correct technique and safety considerations

  • Teach your partner or support person how to administer the treatment at home

  • Provide enough smokeless moxa sticks for your course of treatment

  • Provide written instructions

  • Answer any questions and offer ongoing support

Most women continue the treatment at home for around 10 days, applying the moxa for approximately 20 minutes per day on each foot.

Why Combine Moxibustion With Body Balancing?

Babies often remain breech because of tension or imbalance in the pelvis, ligaments, or surrounding muscles, even upper body tension reduces available space in the uterus!

Body balancing techniques aim to:

  • Release pelvic tension

  • Improve alignment

  • Create functional space in the uterus

  • Allow baby more freedom of movement to be able to turn into a head-down position

During your session, I will guide you through specific positions and movements that you can continue to practice daily at home.

Using Hypnotherapy to Support Breech Babies

Emotional tension, fear, or stress can sometimes translate into physical holding patterns in the body.

Breech-focused hypnotherapy supports:

  • Deep physical relaxation

  • Releasing subconscious fear or tension bening held in the body.

  • Creating a calm internal environment for baby

  • Encouraging communication between you and your baby

You’ll also receive a recorded hypnotherapy audio to continue listening to at home.

Hypnotherapy for breech is powerful and effective. One study that researched it's effectiveness for breech presentation found that 81% of babies in the 'hypnosis combined with usual care' group turned, compared to only 48% in the comparison group who only received usual care.

Is Moxibustion Safe in Pregnancy?

When taught and used correctly, moxibustion is considered safe and non-invasive, with no significant complications reported in research studies.

Before beginning, we’ll always review your individual circumstances to ensure this approach is appropriate for you.
